GREENWICH, Conn. – Two Greenwich High students were selected as national semifinalists in the 2012 Intel Science Talent Search.
Each year, 1,600 U.S. high school seniors enter science projects in the contest. This year, 300 have been selected as semifinalists, including Ryota Ishizuka and William Hallisey of Greenwich High School. The semifinalists will eventually compete for more than $1.25 million in awards and scholarships.
The 40 national finalists will be announced on Jan. 25.
Ishizuka was chosen for his project, "Optimization of a Microbial Fuel Cell to Drive a Bioelectrochemically Assisted Wastewater Treatment Reactor." He produced a fuel cell using human waste.
Hallisey was selected for engineering a portable, textile-based water filtration system that removes bacteria from contaminated drinking water. The project is called, "Electrified Nanoscale Architecture in Mixed Matrix Membranes as a Means of Rapid Throughput Water Sterilization."
