GREENWICH, Conn. – Bedbugs have been found in isolated cases at Hamilton Avenue School in Greenwich this month, district officials said.
Three bedbugs were found in three separate incidents. A dead bedbug was found on a student’s backpack Dec. 2, and two live bedbugs were found Dec. 9 and Dec. 14. One of the live bugs was found on the same student who had carried a dead bedbug into the schools on a backpack, Kim Eves, spokeswoman for Greenwich Public Schools, said in an article in Greenwich Time.
“The building is not infested. We had the four isolated incidents,” Eves said in the article.
Bedbugs are small, flat, reddish brown insects that feed on human blood. According to the Mayo Clinic, bedbugs can be infected with some blood-borne diseases if they feed on infected people. However, they are not known to transmit diseases.
An exterminator steam-cleaned the classrooms where bedbugs were found, and plans are in the works to treat the entire school during winter break next week.
